How to read a sun path diagram

A sun path diagram is a map of the sky seen from your site. It shows where the sun is at every hour, on any day of the year, so you can place windows, shading and outdoor spaces with the sun in mind.

  1. 01

The outer circle is the horizon

North is at the top. The letters around the edge are the compass directions, as on a site plan.

  2. 02

The rings are the sun’s height

The closer a point is to the centre, the higher the sun. The centre is straight overhead; the dashed rings mark 30° and 60°.

  3. 03

    Each curve is one day

The longest day runs closest to the centre and the shortest day furthest out. Every other day of the year falls between them.

  4. 04

    The dots are the hours

Follow your day’s curve from sunrise on the east side to sunset on the west to see where the sun is at 8 am, at noon or at 4 pm.

Questions

Is it free?

Yes. No account, nothing to install.

Can I use it in my drawings?

Yes. Download a PNG for boards and presentations, or an SVG to edit in your drawing software.

Which time does it show?

The local clock time at the address, including daylight saving, wherever you are viewing it from.

How accurate is it?

Sun positions come from standard astronomical formulas, so sunrise and sunset land within a minute or two of published times. Hills and nearby buildings are not taken into account here; in Toras they are.
